I can't think of a better place to leave my hats in Málaga, and I definitely can't think of anyone more professional than Natalia to be in charge of them. Besides... Is she not an incredible model?

Life in Black and White

I adore watching classic movies, more so if they are in black and white. Nothing beats a classic films marathon on a rainy Sunday afternoon, with a hot cup of coffee and in good company. Except maybe listening to old records on a rainy Sunday afternoon with a hot cup of coffee and in good company. Uhm. I think wine could work here too... Anyway! 

Me encantan las películas clásicas. Sobre todo si son en blanco y negro. No hay nada mejor que disfrutar de un maratón de cine clásico en una tarde de domingo lluviosa con una taza de café calentita y en buena compañía. Bueno, aunque escuchar viejos discos en una tarde de domingo lluviosa con un taza de café calentita y en buena compañía tampoco está mal. Mmmm... En fin, si cambiamos el café por el vino la cosa también funciona, ¿no? 

I love how everyone looked so sharp and how, even though most of the dialogues and situations would seem incredibly naive in real life, everything worked so well on screen... For instance, no matter how emotional or crazy the lead actress got, the lead actor would always end up falling in love with her. Hardly the case in real life, eh? But still, it's nice and refreshing to evade from the sometimes difficult reality to immerse ourselves in a black and white fantasy world of elegant women and men who always know the perfect thing to say/do. Let's not forget that men always wore hats and looked absolutely stunning in them. Whatever happened to that? 

Me encanta ver a todos los actores tan bien vestidos y metidos en situaciones y en diálogos relativamente ingenuos en la vida real, pero que dan estupendamente en pantalla... Por ejemplo, en las películas clásicas la actriz podía ser histérica y emocional hasta la saciedad, y el actor principal siempre acababa enamorado de ella hasta la médula. Igualito que en la vida real, ¿eh? Pero aún así, es muy agradable y refrescante tener la oportunidad de evadirse de la a veces difícil realidad para sumergirnos en una fantasía en blanco y negro de elegantes mujeres y hombres que siempre saben exactamente lo que tienen que decir y hacer. Por no mencionar que los hombres siempre llevaban sombreros en las películas clásicas. ¿Qué ha pasado con eso?

Women too looked incredible in their hats and their hair pieces. We should wear hats everyday! 

También las mujeres estaban estupendas con sus sombreros y sus tocados. ¡Deberíamos llevarlos cada día!

Billy Wilder's The Apartment - A rare gem, a subtle comedy with just the right dose of drama, wonderfully executed by Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine. I'll never get tired of watching this movie.

El Apartamento - Toda una joya sin igual de Billy Wilder, una comedia sutil con un pequeño toque dramático maravillosamente ejecutada por Jack Lemmon y Shirley MacLaine. No me canso de ver esta película. 

Billy Wilder's Some Like it Hot - We could not possibly forget the recently deceased Tony Curtis here. Such a perfect actor for a such a perfect movie... Godspeed, Tony Curtis...

Con Faldas y a lo Loco - ¿Qué decir de esta genialidad? No podíamos, además, dejar de mencionarla ya que Tony Curtis acaba de fallecer. Este es nuestro pequeño homenaje a un gran actor que dio la talla como nadie en una gran película.

The delightful and hilarious romantic comedy Irma la Douce gathers Lemmon and MacLaine together again under the orders of Billy Wilder. 

La encantadora y graciosísima comedia Irma la Dulce vuelve a reunir a Lemmon y MacLaine bajo las órdenes de Billy Wilder. 

Joseph L. Mankiewicz's All About Eve - No hats in this film, but there was no way I could leave it out of this post. Especially since it just turned 60 years old... Happy birthday, wonderful movie!

Eva al Desnudo cumple ahora 60 años, así que a pesar de que no sale ningún sombrero en la película, no podía dejar de mencionarla. ¡Feliz cumpleaños, gran película! 

George Steven's Woman of the Year - With Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, one of my favorite couples on and off screen. An impossible love, yet more real than many perfect couples on paper. Hepburn is, by far, one of my favorite actresses, for her unconventional, yet, breathtaking beauty, and her strength as well as her incredible skills as an actress. 

La Mujer del Año - Con Katharine Hepburn y Spencer Tracy, una de mis parejas preferidas dentro y fuera de la pantalla. Un amor imposible, y sin embargo, más real que muchas de las parejas aparentemente perfectas. Hepburn es, sin duda, una de mis actrices favoritas, por su belleza no convencional aunque arrebatadora, su fuerza y sus increíbles dotes artísticas. 

Howard Hawks' Bringing up Baby - More of Katharine, this time with the wonderful Cary Grant as a partenaire. I can't give you anything but love, baby...

Alfred Hitchcock's Notorious - Let's move on onto another genius, Alfred Hitchcock. In Notorious, Grant and Ingrid Bergman defy pride to conquer true love against the odds.

Sigamos con otro genio: Alfred Hitchcock. En Encadenados, Ingrid Bergman y Cary Grant desafían al orgullo y conquista el amor verdadero contra todo pronóstico.

Irving Rapper's Now, voyager - In this movie, a trip will turn Bette Davies' life around. Don't her eyes look even sadder and more mysterious under that veil? 

En La Extraña Pasajera, la vida de Bette Davis da un giro de 180 grados a raíz de un viaje. ¿No parecen sus ojos incluso más tristes y misteriosos tras ese velo?

Blake Edward's Breakfast in Tiffany's - A bit of a cliché, yes, but leaving Audrey Hepburn out of a post dedicated to classic movies and hats wouldn't have made any sense... So here she is! Possibly the most stylish and elegant actresses in the story of cinema.

En un post dedicado a clásicos y a sombreros, no podíamos dejar de hablar de la estilosa Audrey Hepburn y su Desayuno con Diamantes...

Michael Curtiz's Casablanca - The love triangle par excellence. One of the most heartbreaking love stories ever written. Would you have stayed with your husband if you were Ingrid Bergman? I probably wouldn't have, but I am not the most pragmatic woman I know either... :)

Casablanca - El triángulo amoroso por excelencia. Una de las historias de amor más tristes de la historia del cine. ¿Os habríais quedado vosotras con el marido de Ingrid Bergman? Yo probablemente no, pero claro, ¡no es que yo sea la mujer más pragmática del mundo! :)

King Vidor's The Fountainhead - I saw this one recently. To be honest I wasn't very eager to watch it, since Ayn Rand's book blew me away, but I have to admit it's a very good adaptation, and Gary Cooper plays Howard Roark like no other... 

El Manantial - Esta la vi hace muy poco. Reconozco que no me apetecía demasiado verla porque el libro de Ayn Rand me encantó, pero lo cierto es que es una muy buena adaptación, y Gary Cooper hace el papel de Howard Roark como nadie... 

Jean-Luc Goddard's A bout de souffle- This is possibly one of my favorite photos of all times. I love Jean Seberg. I once had my hair cut like hers and wore it that short for years. Not the most flattering hair cut to wear a hat, but, on the other hand Jean-Paul Belmondo rocks his like no one else...

The list is never ending and I am sure I'll come up with a thousand more once I publish this post, but for now... this is it!

Al final de la escapada de Jean-Luc Goddard. Este es posiblemente uno de mis fotogramas preferidos de la historia del cine. Adoro a Jean Seberg. Una vez me corté el pelo como ella y lo tuve así de corto durante años. No es el corte de pelo más favorecedor del mundo para llevar sombreros, pero por otra parte a Jean-Paul Belmondo el suyo le queda que ni pintado...

Bueno, la lista sería interminable así que aquí lo dejamos. Estoy segura de que se me ocurrirán cientos de películas más una vez le de al botón de "publicar", pero por ahora... ¡esto es todo! 

Wherever I lay my hat...

...that's my home...  as Marvin Gaye's song that would later become popular thanks to the English singer Paul Young said. Though this title describes perfectly the way things are in my life at the moment, I am not going to talk about nomadic life here, but about one of my greatest passions in life: Music.

...that's my home...  que decía Marvin Gaye en una que sería canción popularizada años más tarde por el británico Paul Young. A pesar de que el título de esta canción, tal y cómo están las cosas últimamente, me viene como anillo al dedo, tan sólo quería utilizarlo para introducir este post que tratará una de mis grandes pasiones: la música.


The undersigned is and has always been unconditionally in love with music. And with always I mean it quite literally. I am not exaggerating one bit when I say that I started learning English on my own by translating all kinds of songs. Record player at the ready, bilingual dictionary in one hand, pen and paper, and a lot of patience that I must have left somewhere along the way, I'd translate and translate and translate. Needless to say, the first time I went to the UK I didn't understand one word that was being said to me. But regardless! In any case, music has been and still is my most loyal companion, in the good times and the bad times.

Aquí, la que suscribe es una incondicional amante de la música desde su más tierna infancia. Literalmente. No exagero cuando afirmo que prácticamente aprendí inglés (para salir del paso, al menos) yo solita, radiocasete en ristre y diccionario Larousse en mano, traduciendo todo tipo de canciones. No discriminé casi ningún tipo de música. Casi todo valía. Y así sigue siendo. Aunque... bueno, igual me he vuelto un poco más selectiva. En cualquier caso, la música ha sido y sigue siendo mi más fiel compañera, en los buenos y en los malos momentos, y no podía dejar, por lo tanto, de rendirle un pequeño tributo.

And so you'd say: I came here to read about hats! All right then! Music and fashion, to some people's dismay and other people's delight, have always been closely related. And many singers that I have admired, or simply liked throughout the years have worn, and still wear, hats and cocktail hats.

Pero ¿este blog no hablaba de tocados y sombreros? ¡Así es! La música y la moda, para disgusto de unos y deleite de otros, siempre han estado estrechamente vinculadas. Y muchos cantantes a los que he admirado, o simplemente, me han gustado, a lo largo de los años, han llevado, y siguen llevando, sombreros e incluso tocados.

Let's take a look at some.  In chronological order:

- Billie Holiday: Agreed. She deserves an entire post. And she'll have it soon! For now, I just wanted to show a beautiful picture of her with an incredible hat that has definitely inspired Hattini.

Repasemos unos cuantos. Por orden cronológico:

- Billie Holiday: Creo que a ella le tendría que dedicar un post enterito, ¡y así será! Pero de momento, he aquí una foto que retrata su increíble belleza y uno de sus siempre increíbles tocados de flores que han inspirado más de un modelo de Hattini.

- Edith Piaf: I couldn't leave Edith and the chanson française, a genre that I have always adored, behind. Stormy Edith, who never regretted anything in spite of it all...

- Edith Piaf: No puedo olvidar a las maravillosas damas de la chanson française, un género que siempre he adorado. Tormentosa Edith, que a pesar de los pesares, nunca se arrepintió de nada...

- Ella Fitzgerald: What to say about Ella? Her version of Autumn in New York with Louis Armstrong gives me goosebumps...

- Ella Fitzgerald: ¿Qué decir de Ella?  Cada vez que oigo su versión de Autumn in New York junto a Louis Armstrong se me pone la piel de gallina...

- Juliette Grèco: More chanson. Friend of Sartre's and a big fan of Yves Montand, the stylish Juliette borrowed Montand's Sous le ciel de Paris and made it her most known song. By the way, if you haven't seen the film An Education,  I don't know what you are waiting for! It's a masterpiece! And Grèco has a couple of songs in the soundtrack.

- Juliette Grèco: Más de la chanson. Amiga de Sartre, y fan de Yves Montand, la estilosa Juliette tomó prestada su canción Sous le ciel de Paris, que se convirtió en su tema más conocido. Por cierto, si no habéis visto la película La Educación, ¡no sé a qué estáis esperando! ¡Es una obra maestra! Y Grèco aparece con dos cortes en la banda sonora.

- Bob Dylan: Is there anything left to say about Dylan? The quintessential chronicler, poet, lyricist, musician and Civil Rights advocate of the 20th century.

-Bob Dylan: ¿Qué se puede decir de Dylan que no se haya dicho ya mil veces? El cronista, poeta, letrista, músico, defensor de derechos civiles por excelencia del siglo XX.

- Aretha Franklin: In spite of being one of the greatest dames of Soul music, fashion wise Aretha will go down in history for having worn one the most horrendous hair pieces ever seen at President Obama's inaugural speech. Here's a slightly more flattering model...

- Aretha Franklin: Pese a haber sido una de las damas del soul por excelencia, en cuestión de sombreros, Aretha sin duda pasará a la historia por haber llevado una de las piezas más espantosas jamás vistas al discurso de investidura del presidente Obama. Aquí vamos  a poner otro ejemplo un poco más favorecedor...

- Janis Joplin: Tumultuous Janis, one of the first women to be considered and respected in the Rock and Roll world, a unique voice that will never be forgotten.

-Janis Joplin: La maltrecha Janis, una de las primeras mujeres consideradas y  respetadas en el mundo del Rock and Roll, una voz primera dama del Rock n Roll, una voz única que nunca podremos olvidar.

- Freddie Mercury: Granted, it is not a hat per se, but what else should a queen wear if not a crown?


- Freddie Mercury: Vale, no es un sombrero, pero ¿qué mejor para una reina que una corona?


- David Bowie: one of the most elegant men in the world of music, and along with Marc Bolan, the greatest exponent of Glam Rock.

- Stevie Wonder: (This one's for you and Paulita, Mel!) Isn't she lovely?

- Madonna: fun, refreshing and different in the 80s, insufferable diva in 2010. Oh well, she had to be on this list no matter what.

- Jeff Buckley: so so sad that he's not amongst us anymore...

- Eryka Baduh: No one, and I mean, no one, rocks a hat like Erykah Badu... She is a client of the Hat Shop, one of the shops in Manhattan that carries Hattini. Maybe one of these days...


- Eryka Baduh: Nadie, y quiero decir, nadie, lleva un sombrero tan bien como Erykah Badu... Es clienta habitual de The Hat Shop, una de las tiendas que lleva Hattini en Manhattan. Igual uno de estos días...

- Björk: You can love her or hate her, but she is undoubtedly something else...

- Björk: Puedes odiarla o adorarla, pero no te dejará indiferente...

- Eddie Vedder and Jeff Ament: Pearl Jam's singer and bassist respectively. On their first tour, Eddie would wear this black cap all the time. Jeff has always been known for wearing rather bizarre hats on and off stage.

- Eddie Vedder and Jeff Ament: El cantante y el bajista de Pearl Jam, respectivamente. Durante su primera gira, Eddie llevaba siempre una gorra negra. Jeff siempre ha sido famoso por llevar los gorros más extraños tanto dentro como fuera del escenario.




























- Lily Allen: I adore this girl... And I have the feeling she would love Hattini. Anyone has her address, by any chance?

- Lily Allen: Me encanta esta chica... Y tengo la impresión de que le gustaría mucho Hattini. ¿Alguien tiene su dirección por algún casual?

 - CocoRosie: And here's one of the bands I recommend you give a listen to if you haven't already: the eccentric sisters CocoRosie. Thanks, Katrin! ;)
