A lovely street market by the sea

Aahhh, Málaga, Spain. Here we are, enjoying some time in this wonderful city by the sea... But don't think it's been all play and no work in these last two months, no. The incredible Baños del Carmen Market, organized by the equally incredible Blanca Beneitez and Tina Suárez has kept Hattini very very busy.

Held on the first Sunday of each month since this last Spring, the Baños del Carmen Market is an initiative that has the purpose of promoting the work of young designers, as well as supporting local businesses and organic produce. Organic vegetables, pottery, handmade jewellery, handpainted t-shirts, children's organic clothing, organic bread, hand-made cocktail hats, paintings or eco-friendly soaps are some of the things one can expect to find at the market every four weeks.

For those who don't know this area, here's a bit of history: The Baños del Carmen spa was opened in july 1918. Men and women weren't allowed to bathe together then, and it wasn't until a few years later that that restriction was removed. This spa was amongst the first ones of the country to ignore the reigning segregation, however, right after the Spanish civil war, and under Franco's dictatorship, the separation was imposed again.

The 1920s would bring a quay, a restaurant and a tennis court (that would hold the first tennis championship of the city of Málaga) to the area. The spa also had an immense dance floor (of over 2,000 square meters), that witnessed different concerts and incredible parties that made the summer night at the Baños famous all over Andalusia. But in reality we don't have to go that far back in history... I remember perfectly some of the incredible parties that were held at the Baños when I was a teenager... Amazing!

The future of the Baños del Carmen area is yet unknown. This past July, national and regional Administrations agreed on a plan that contemplates the improvement of the coastline and the enlargement of the beach, but honestly, and in my humble opinion, the labour performed by Blanca and Tina to increase the sentimental (and probably financial) value of this otherwise abandoned area, has been priceless. Thank you so much, ladies! And thanks, of course, for letting Hattini be part of this incomparable market. Hats off to you!

Hats off to you!
