The time has come! Ladies... choose your weapons! Or... erhm... your hats more like it. For all of you who will attend the Kentucky Derby, the Royal Ascot, the Chantilly Prix de Diane or the Gran Premio de Madrid, here's a few suggestions on how to dress your lovely heads.

¡Ya llegó la temporada! Señoras y señoritas... ¡escojan sus armas! Bueno... más bien sus sombreros. Para todas aquellas que tengan la intención de acudir a las carreras de caballos, ya sea en Ascot, Kentucky, Chantilly o Madrid, aquí dejo algunas sugerencias para vestir vuestras preciosas cabecitas.

Easter Parade
Remember that 1948 movie where Fred Astaire and Judy Garland strolled (and danced, and sang) down 5th Avenue on Easter Sunday wearing their finest frocks and wonderful hats? Well, in case you didn't know, the Easter Parade is a real tradition held every Easter Sunday in New York City, and this year, Hattini took part on it.

¿Recordáis aquella película de 1948 en la que Fred Astaire y Judy Garland paseaban (y bailaban y cantaban) por la 5ª Avenida el domingo de Pascua llevando sus mejores galas y unos sombreros fantásticos? Pues, para quién no lo sepa, el desfile de Pascua es una tradición real en Nueva York, y este año Hattini ha tenido la oportunidad de participar en él.

La crème de la crème of New York's millinery was represented by some of the members of the NY Milliners Guild (above). From 10am until 4pm, 5th Avenue was a colourful fète! 


La nota de estilo lo puso la NY Milliners Guild (arriba) representando a algunos de los sombreros más importantes de la ciudad. ¡Desde las 10 de la mañana hasta las 4 de la tarde, la 5ª Avenida fue una fiesta de color!

But not everything about the Easter Parade oozes elegance. In reality, most of the paraders wear the most outrageous hats, and disguise their poor pets in carnivalesque outfits. But... to each, their own!

Pero no todo en el desfile de Pascua rezuma elegancia. En realidad, la mayoría de los participantes llevan sombreros de lo más extravagantes, y visten a sus pobres mascotas con disfraces dignos de carnaval. ¡Para gustos, los colores!

Hothouse flowers of the new decade

It's been long, I know! But let me just say I still have not recover from NY Fashion Week hangover. Did I mention Hattini participated in the NYC Milliners Guild fashion show? If I didn't then I should have! Let's see... Do we have some photos??

¡Cuánto tiempo! Lo se, lo se... Pero en mi defensa, tengo que decir que aún me queda la resaca de la Semana de la Moda de Nueva York. ¿Sabíais que Hattini participó en el desfile del NYC Milliners Guild? ¿Que no? ¡Pues debería haberlo mencionado! Veamos... ¿Tenemos alguna foto? 

Hattini, along with other 12 members of the NYC Milliners Guild, unveiled an exotic array of Fall 2010 pieces at the organization's first runway show.

Junto con otros 12 diseñadores de tocados y sombreros del NYC Milliners Guild, Hattini mostró una exótica selección de piezas de la línea de Otoño 2010 en el primer desfile de modas de la organización.

The event took place at the Grace Hotel, located in midtown Manhattan, and one of the greatest spot I can think of for a fashion show. Not easy for the models with all those stairs, the pool in the lobby and a three different levels...

El evento tuvo lugar en el Hotel Grace, situado en el centro de Manhattan, y uno de los sitios más alucinantes que conozco para organizar una pasarela. Nada fácil para los modelos, que tuvieron que lidiar con escalones, una enorme piscina situada en el centro del vestíbulo y caminar por tres niveles diferentes...

But they did an outstanding job, smiled a lot and rocked our hats while flirting with the many many cameras that flashed non-stop!

Pero hicieron un trabajo genial, sonrieron muchísimo, y llevaron nuestros sombreros y tocados con una maestría sin igual, flirteando, a la vez, con las muchas cámaras que disparaban sus flashes sin parar.

And in the end, the milliners got out there with our models and took a well-deserved bow! 

Al final, los diseñadores salimos a la pasarela con nuestras modelos, y ¡recibimos una bien merecida ovación!

20 years without Ava


It's been 20 years since glorious Ava Gardner died. The world's most beautiful animal, as a 1950s publicity campaign named her, left us in 1990, but her memory will stay with us forever.

Hace ya 20 años desde que la gloriosa Ava Gardner nos dejara. El animal más bello del mundo, como se la nombró en una campaña publicitaria de los años 50, nos dejó a principios de los años 90, pero su memoria permanecerá para siempre entre nosotros.

For, who else could wear a hat with such elegance? As a hairpieces designer, I have to say Ava is one of my inspirations.

Y es que, ¿quién más puede llevar un sombrero o un tocado con tanta elegancia? Como diseñadora de tocados, tengo que admitir que Ava es una de mis inspiraciones.

I kind of wish women still wore hats, and gloves, and bright red lipstick, and perfect hair, and tiny purses and pencil skirts, and that smoking was still cool (and it didn't kill, and stink, that is).

En el fondo me encantaría que las mujeres aún llevaran sombreros, y guantes, y lápiz de labios rojo, y un peinado perfecto, y pequeños bolsitos, y faldas de tubo, y que fumar aún fuera estupendo (y no matara, ni apestara, claro).

I kind of wish, also, that women nowadays could get away with some of the things Ava said: "When I lose my temper, honey, you can't find it any place". You gotta love her honesty!

Y ya que estamos, también me encantaría que las mujeres de hoy día pudiéramos decir cosas como estas, y que nadie pensara que estamos locas: "Cuando pierdo los nervios, querido, no hay quién los encuentre". ¡Me encanta su honestidad"

This is Hattini's small tribute to this impressive woman, and we hope her elegance will remain with us forever.
